Gaviscon Original Liquid provides fast, soothing and long lasting relief from the pain and discomfort of heartburn.
The active ingredients in Gaviscon Original Liquid work in the following ways to provide effective relief from heartburn.
Sodium alginate reacts with the acid in your stomach to form a thick gel-like layer, or raft
Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate also react with stomach acid, releasing bubbles of carbon dioxide
These bubbles allow the raft to float on top of the contents of the stomach
The raft forms a strong protective barrier on top of the stomach contents, which helps to prevent stomach acid flowing back into the oesophagus
Gets to work instantly
The active ingredients in Gaviscon Original Liquid react rapidly when they come into contact with stomach acid, helping to provide effective heartburn relief, fast. Find out how Gaviscon Original works in more detail here.
Soothes and cools the oesophagus
Gaviscon Original provides fast acting relief from heartburn and is available in liquid and tabletvarieties. Some people find they prefer the liquid option as it can help to soothe, coat and cool the lining of the oesophagus as it is ingested. Others might prefer the tablet form as they are great on-the-go option.
Lasts up to 2x longer than antacids
Gaviscon Original Liquid works differently to antacids. Rather than neutralising the stomach acid (which can cause the stomach to produce more acid in reaction to the neutralisation), Gaviscon creates a strong physical barrier on top of the stomach contents. This barrier does not affect the acidity of your stomach. Instead, it helps to keep stomach acid in the stomach where it belongs and prevents it from travelling up into the oesophagus where it could cause pain or irritation.1For this reason, Gaviscon provides relief for up to 2x longer than antacids.
Suitable for use in pregnancy
Gaviscon Original Liquid provides effective relief from heartburn and is suitable to use during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. This is because Gaviscon Original Liquid acts physically rather than entering the bloodstream.
